Living down here in Mojacar, I dont always get the opportunity to gig as much as I’d like. The shows with BC Sweet and Christie are usually spaced throughout the year, and I do a lot of thumb-twiddling in the meantime. A couple of years back, my friend, Saxophonist Ron Johnson, ran a restaurant and music bar called “Sax on the Beach” and he, I and Pepe Mena, an excellent local Spanish drummer – formed an improv jazz-rock trio to while away the hours. Here’s a pic, courtesy of Pepe’s my space, of the three of us joined by Brendan O’Dee on keys, playing at the Jazz Life cafe in Mojacar village.

Expanding my musical horizons like this is very useful, and ultimately rewarding. From improvising with these guys, I came up with the bass riff which would eventually become “A Cat called Caramel” which will eventually feature on my solo album.

Ron’s back in Canada now, putting together a huge soul band, keepin’ da funk alive!

  1. Loved the “cat called caramel”! Is this a pet in your present or from your past? I can’t imagine immortalizing our cat, Phil, that way – he and I have a love-hate relationship and I think he got all of the love…

I didn’t realize Miki was so talented with makeup! Did she use some of her acrylic paints to turn you into a cat? Very cool look for you, Kev.

  2. Well, Bob, the cat in question was Miki’s when she was a little girl. I just latched onto the phrase when she said she had a “Cat called Caramel” – I loved it for a song title! Regarding my look – I think it was our Cafe cremer Shelley who thought it was a good look for Halloween! (personally, I think I’m scarier without it!) Miki seems to think it was gouache paint she used, but it could well have been Franco regime toxic lead-based…..

  3. What a pity that Ron does not live in Spain any more, now that we live in Turre.. I would have loved to assist to one of your gigs… I remember exactly as you did that one, it was quite at the beginning of our relationship, Kev Moore, and I did not dare mixing with “The Musicians”. Not that I am much better now… still quite wild in social skills! 🙂
But I hope that Ron finds this post in his far Canada and drops us a line here!

Yes, I had a cat called caramel. It was black and called so because it loved caramels, and I shared mine with him.
I have somewhere a photo from me and that cat, I was about 3 years old. I look terrific on the photo, like a dirty fast dwarf… I might publish it someday, if I find it again…
