METRO Interview

I was recently interviewed by the METRO Newspaper and it featured last Thursday in their SEEN & HEARD section. I thought I’d share it with you here:

A song, and a sigh of relief!

Back in sunny Spain today, after some unexpected sunshine in the UK. I was a little concerned when I strode out onto the Pride park pitch for my soundcheck at 10 a.m. – when I was  accompanied by not only my backtrack but also a steady shower! Luckily the clouds passed, and I went over to the JJB soccerdome to put in an appearance at the RT stand in the foyer, where I had a great time meeting some fellow 606ers who have followed the story of the album from its inception, signing CD’s and so on. I was even honoured to have the track I was performing that day immortalised in face paint!

Great to meet up with the likes of Viewfrom, RJ, Unlucky Eddie, Chaddite, etc – and a big thanks to Dave and Paul Mortimer for arranging the meet’n’greet and signing session. I took to the pitch at around 2.25, with hordes of fans still outside the ground, but, judging from those who were in the area for the soundcheck, it could be heard outside anyway!  The acoustics of modern stadia play havoc with your timing, and I had a fun job trying to keep in time with the track, especially with the team stopping to watch in between their warm-up, just in front of me!

Job done, I headed for my seat in the Southwest lower, and witnessed a fairly nondescript first half in the bright sunshine, peppered with glimpses of Commons fast returning to form.  Half-time couldn’t come soon enough, and I headed into the Pedigree lounge to meet one of my heroes, Dave Mackay, along with Peter Daniel, and it was great to tell them what pleasure they’d brought me as a kid attending the Baseball ground in the early 70’s.

Dave Mackay and fan!

Dave Mackay and fan!

Peter Daniel, Kev, and Dave Mackay

Peter Daniel, Kev, and Dave Mackay

They were true gentlemen, from a different age of football, but who had given this club a legacy it can be justifiably proud of. Should the current squad need inspiration, they need look no further than Dave Mackay, who won what is now the Premiership for Derby both as a Captain and a manager.

It was a privilege to meet these legends from our past.

The second half brought a bit more fight from The Rams, and finally, almost inevitably, it was our player of the year, Rob Hulse who got the solitary goal in an unremarkable match, that secured our Championship status.  this time, there were no defensive slip-ups, and we hung on for the 90+3 minutes. The scoreboard made sweet viewing, and the SE corner erupted into a conga-come pitch invasion that ensured that the players could only thank the fans from the safety of the directors box.  It was a privilege to perform in our  stadium, and humbling a little later to see people in the shop buying my CD, which was borne of a love for the team that I’ve supported all my life.

I also want to thank the team behind-the-scenes at DCFC for looking after me on what was clearly a hectic day for them. Don’t forget, you can buy the CD “Fan Fayre for the commons people” from our online shop via the links on this website, from shopDCFC and their website, and also from the RT website and their staged events.

The impromptu conga by the South east corner, morphing into   a full-scale pitch invasion was almost reminiscent of the  Wembley play-off final – exuberance at securing safety clearly on a par with that achievement on Saturday!

The reason for that exuberance is hope -hope of a bright future for The Rams. It is surely a task Nigel Clough relishes – putting Derby County back where it belongs, with the cream of English Football. In these days of the 30-second soundbyte, and the even shorter attention span, let’s hope he gets the time and understanding he deserves to the job properly.

The players thank the amazing support

A Busy Weekend!

I hit the ground running this evening, as I leave home around 7p.m. to drive to Murcia airport to catch my flight which will deliver me into that hub of cosmopolitan travel that is known as East Midlands Airport around 11:10p.m.  suitably drained, I anticipate bed as near this side of midnight as I possibly can, before rising early to supervise the shipment of the steadily growing number of advance CD orders. A Pride Park soundcheck awaits me at 10, and then at the crack of Noon I’ll be over at the JJB for an hour lurking around the RT stall, where the”Red Dog” edition of the CD is on sale.  The DCFC – endorsed edition has arrived at Pride Park, and will also be on sale through the club shop from tomorrow.

At 2:20, I’ll be out in the Stadium, belting out “Commons People” as part of the Rams Fan Day celebrations, and I can’t wait, especially with heroes from my boyhood wandering the halls, such as Dave Mackay and Ron Webster!

At 3, like everyone, I’ll be sat, fingers crossed, hoping for 90 minutes of heaven, hoping the team can give the fans a performance and result that Derby’s fantastic support deserves. If you see me wandering about during the day, come and say hello!

Commons People live!

With a big thank you to DCFC, I can now announce that the song I will be singing before the Charlton game will not be “Steve Bloomer’s Watching”, but “Commons People”. A lot of fans have requested this particular number, and I’m happy to report that I will now be performing it live with the backtrack at 2.20pm, as part of the pre-match festivities. I know it’s a little early, but get yourselves in there for a good singalong!

DET article

Yesterday saw me featured in the Derby Evening Telegraph, a paper I first appeared in back in 1978, when the late Alan Smith would regularly write about my band Midnight Express. In 1981 I appeared with my next major band Tubeless Hearts, as we released our first single, and then again in the 90’s when I paid tribute to Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy on Stars in their Eyes. More recently, it was to announce the first song in the “Derby” series – Derby Pride, commemorating Nigel’s appointment and the return of the Clough dynasty. Martin Naylor’s piece yesterday focused on the completion of that project: the  Fan fayre for the Commons people CD. For those of you for whom yesterdays Telegraph is now todays fish and chip wrapper, you can still see the article below!

Appointment with the faithful…..

I have the singular honour on April 25th, the date of  Derby County’s final home match of the season against Charlton Athletic, to be singing “Commons People”, out on the hallowed turf in front of  the Pride Park faithful. But just for your amusement, listen to a clip of my new version of “Steve Bloomer’s (still) Watching” from the forthcoming CD:

Unless you have followed a football team all your life, from your home town, it is difficult to convey what this means. I have been fortunate in my career to have played the world over. I have played in the legendary CBGB’s in New York, I have played at Moscow Dynamo Stadium, I have played to over 30,000 at the Rhine Festival in Bonn. I even gigged at Anfield!

But to walk out onto the pitch on which your team play, surrounded by your fellow fans….This is something special, and marks an extraordinary highlight in my career. To know my father will be in the stands, watching me, remembering when he used to take me to the Baseball Ground as a boy to witness Brian Clough’s golden era, makes it even more poignant.

I want to thank all the Derby fans across the world who have encouraged, supported and even participated in this labour of love, it’s been a privilege. Derby fans stand tall, and the success Nigel will surely bring to the club in time is nothing less than they deserve. I hope to meet some of you there – UP THE RAMS!

The CD will be on sale for advanced orders online from April 17th, check back to mooremusic.biz for details, and on Matchday from the Club shop and the Ramstrust meet at the JJB Soccerdome.

WHY NOT VISIT OUR ONLINE SHOP?

The club will stock the DCFC-approved version,  The JJB meet will sell the limited edition “red dog” artwork version, and mooremusic.biz will sell both. The “red dog” version is strictly limited to 500 copies. See the pictures below:

Derby County Blues

ram-and-red-dog

It’s finally arrived – Fan Fayre for the Commons People hits the streets on April 25th, and will be available in TWO very special editions:

Firstly the “RedDog” limited edition. Only 500 of these will be made, featuring “the Red Dog and the Ram” interior artwork as shown here! Available online in our store and other outlets to be announced.

Secondly, the Derby County officially endorsed version, soon to be available through the club website and shop.

Today, listen to the full version of another track from the album, a tale of a hapless gambler who is losing everything betting on his beloved Rams to win in THAT Premiership season – so bad do things become, he wrestles with his conscience and decides to bet on them to lose….the only problem is – it’s the Newcastle game! Enjoy “Derby County Blues”!

Derby County Blues

It’s early Friday morning, the sun is coming up

I’m stood outside the bookies, I’m here to try my luck

They say this game’s a tough one, but I’ll give it my best shot

4-0 down and losin’, never seen the Spurs so hot

O lord, what am I gonna do

I’m stood here with my head down

Save me from the Derby County blues

First I pulled out a fiver I’d had a golden tip

A man I know in Anfield said that Liverpool had dipped

I think it was a wind-up and I was non too pleased

The six the reds put past us were easy as the breeze

O lord, which club should I choose?

I’m a Ramsfan ’til I die, boys

But save me from the Derby County blues

Somebody score more!

Well I started out with 3 grand, now 2 of them are lost

We’ve got one long premier season as we’ve found to our cost

I know what I am doing, but I feel such a louse

If I don’t back the Rams to lose I’ll have to sell my house

O lord, what am I gonna do

Lets throw out the deadwood

Save me from the Derby County blues

I had to sell my season ticket, got a tenner for my shirt

I’m prayin that we’re losin’ and I’m in a world of hurt

It’s a grand back for a tenner

If I win this I’m in luck

Then the Rams go beat Newcastle and I feel like such a schmuck

O lord, what am I gonna do

I’ll be back in church next Sunday

Save me from the Derby County blues

48 hours

The writer, beneath the subject of his song....

The writer, beneath the subject of his song....

I think it must have been nearly 24 hours after I’d woken up in our apartment in Turre that I finally hit the stage with BC Sweet at a 70’s festival in Skegness on the East coast of England. Another 12 hours or so after that I was doing the rounds of Radio Stations and also meeting with various people at Pride Park, home of Derby County Football Club to discuss their involvement in my CD project. By 5.50 pm on Thursday, I’d been on the go for around 36 hours, with barely 4 hours of those dedicated to sleep, and I took to the airwaves on The Ross Fletcher Show on Radio Derby, hosted this week by Colin Bloomfield. You can still hear the show HERE. I come on around the end, when the timer says 1:48:22 and you can scroll through to that point.

Another 12 hours later, which included driving up to Yorkshire to visit my son, I was boarding a plane to take me back to Spain! An exhausting, but productive and rewarding trip. The release date for the CD is fast approaching, and I’m hoping to announce more in the coming days. In the meantime, enjoy another teaser clip from the album – a reworking of that traditional classic – what else but The Derby Ram!

Wooly Bully

As well as being a classic 60’s song by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs (or should that be Sam the Ram?)  it’s also my “handle” on one of the Derby County discussion forums, the name alluding to The Rams (Wooly) and living in Spain (Bully).

But it struck me that it would be a great song to do a version of for the Derby CD, so to get a lyric idea I asked a couple of the guys on the BBC 606 Derby County discussion board for some anecdotes related to DCFC.  Contributors Unlucky Eddie and Kernowram came up with the goods! the full lyrics are presented here, with a snippet from the track itself. Just click on the player.

Wooly Bully

uno, dos, one, two, tres quatro!
Wooly Bully!

Oh, I went to watch Derby, play the Mighty Finns
We were on course, for a record win

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

Ah, the man next to me, had to take a slash
a few minutes later, back to my side he dashed

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

uno, dos, one, two, tres quatro!
Wooly Bully!

Well the guy said to me, “mate, what’ve I missed?”
I said “we knocked 7 more in, while you were having a piss!”
He said “Oh no! ” (Too bad – shoulda brought a bottle)

On a Sat’dee in the 70’s, down at the Baseball Ground
the Leeds and Derby faithful, outside the ground were found

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

Well a Copper on horseback, let his nag drop a load
And the Derby faithful, scraped it off the road

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

uno, dos, one, two, tres quatro!
Wooly Bully!

Lobbing brown projectiles, with all our might
we covered the Leeds fans in a shower of shite

(Well, if the crap fits…)
(..is that why they call them The Dirties?)

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

(you won’t see THAT in the Damned United!)

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

uno, dos, one, two, tres quatro!
Wooly Bully!
