I got an urgent text message last night from my son -“Ring me – Now!” – So, like any dutiful Father, I obeyed. To say he had some good news was something of an understatement. Following his band Jilambis’ triumph at the 02 Academy, Birmingham, and their award of a recording session with Yamaha, they have now been invited by the excellent Schools charity Music for Youth to open the second evening of the three night School Proms 2009 extravaganza at one of the most prestigious venues in the world, The Royal Albert hall. I doubt whether Queen Victoria, upon laying the foundation stone of this memorial to her late husband on the 20th.May (coincidentally my birthday!) 1867, imagined the strains of “Well, this isn’t Texas” echoing around its lofty ceiling, but that is exactly what’s going to happen.

Corey and his band will be walking in the footsteps of some musical greats on November 10th. This is where Cream gave their farewell concert, as well as their reunion show a few years back. This is where Deep Purple made history with their “Concerto for group and orchestra”.

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have appeared there, and it is the only venue where The Beatles and The Rolling Stones appeared on the same bill. The only solo concert performed there was by George Harrison, and indeed, it hosted the Concert for George, to commemorate the first anniversary of his death in 2002.

It is a venue steeped in history and musical legacy, and I know he’s proud and stunned to have the chance to appear there. They won’t be overawed though, they will go about the business of making their music like they always do – confident, hard-working, determined. I have a feeling that on November 10th, Jilambis will be laying the first foundation stone on the road to creating their own little piece of history.  – and this Dad couldn’t be prouder.
